What Not to Gift an Average Nigerian Mother on Mother's Day

Mothers Day is a day to celebrate the woman's role as a mother. As much as mothers love their kids, motherhood is work. It'll be really bad if you, my good men, were to mess up mother's day. This is not to say that men are clueless about what to get women on mothers Day. But I just saw a gifting agency's mothers Day packages and my chest is paining me (I know I know). If they're confident selling those things, there's a reason and the reason is that some men think it's good.

Women like nice things just like you do. Nice things include wigs, jewelry, bags, things that make us feel pretty, things that make us feel seen and appreciated, things that we can look at years later and smile. Nice things DO NOT include any of the things on this list.

Utensils - I saw this in a gifting agency's mother's day box and what came to my mind right away was, as what? Am I a joke to you? Do y'all really think that women have nothing else in their lives aside from kitchen affairs, so much so that utensils make us glow on the inside? Do you believe that we would erupt in joy at the sight of a frying pan?
Would you buy your boss a ream of paper for world boss day? Would you jump for joy if she bought you shoe polish on father's Day?
Please, let us not attract curses to ourselves.

A spa day - This is debatable. Look, spa days are great on camera, but the truth is that it's an hour of bliss, after which she'd step out feeling great and then go pick up her cute little bundle of joy and the source of most of her stress. It's a few minutes where it's hard to fully relax because she's making lists in her head. Mothers find it hard to really relax and a massage only postpones the stress. Do us a favour and take your children to a land far, far away for the whole day. Mothers want to sleep, and not watch cocomelon.

Bag of rice - Is it really her you're gifting or yourself? Because you and I know she'll cook that rice everytime you come by with the kids. Sending a bag of rice to your mother is welfare, it's upkeep, it's stocking the house. It's not a mother's Day gift. She'll dance around and pray for you o, but I want you to know now that you didn't do anything special for her on her special day. You stocked the cupboard.
Keep that bag of rice in your house for now and go find some jewelry.

A fancy dinner - No matter how nice she is, she's thinking of the rice at home, calculating the cost of the food and making a list in her head of all the things you could.use the money to buy...like cement. Whether she'd say it or not depends on whether she's your mother or your wife. I won't say it, but my mom would.
So, take her to dinner but don't say it's her mother's Day gift. It'll be great, she'll get all dressed up, she'll try something new, she'll take great pictures. But Sir, she'll never forget that there is rice at home.

If you want to know what to gift your wife, think about what she'll enjoy. If it's something you'd also enjoy when she gets it, it's not a mothers Day gift. No matter how many times she's talked about an air fryer, it's not a mothers Day gift, it's a household item. If you're going to be eaten potatoes fried in it, buy it another day.

True, women are hard to buy for so here are some top secret, never-before-seen, pro tips; check her Jumia wishlist, check her IG saved posts, check her Pinterest saves, check her screenshots. Regarding the latter, you might find an argument from 5 years ago she's saved for an argument in the next 5 years. Move on, this is not the day, and you honestly don't want the outcome.

I just hope this message is not too late and you haven't already wrapped dish washing liquid or tied a bow around a basket of dried fish.

May God help you.

  1. This was such an interesting read! The perfect thing I needed to start my Thursday. But seriously, I hadn't thought about gifting my mom anything, now I'm having a rethink. Is it okay if I gift myself to her?
