From Content Writing to Everything Content – The Words on Us evolution.
I started out as a freelance content writer and copy editor,
and when Words on Us became a company, it was a content writing company. Why?
That was what I knew how to do, that was what I understood.
It was going great, I had my clients, and a few people I
could work with, and teach.
However, I noticed that it wasn’t enough. My clients love my
work, but it wasn’t enough. They needed more; they needed graphics for the
content I was writing, they needed product photos, they needed animated videos
and someone to put it all up on their page. They could get content written by
me and then go somewhere else for everything else, but did they have to?
The answer was simple. Rather than have them juggling
several service providers, why not give them other stuff they need?
So, I learned how to use Canva,
and I added basic graphic design to the services, and social media management
as well. But still, I was a writer, and so were my teammates. Designing with Canva
wasn’t difficult, but it wasn’t good enough, and it was taking away time that I
could have better used on developing my writing skills, researching for
projects, and simply doing a better job each time.
I wanted to give my clients everything; it was that simple.
I wanted them to be able to get good content, and good content is not just
writing, it includes other things. I couldn’t do all those things (I still
can’t), but I know what good content should look like, no matter the type. With
this in mind, I expanded the company and we began to provide graphic design
services, before long, I got to add video animation to the list, and so it
continued. Each time I discovered a new and untapped skill in any member of my
team, we worked together to develop it, and we expanded. Each time a young
creative approached me to ask how they could develop their skills, Words on Us
expanded.
Since our first hire (who is now head of the design team),
we have been helping creatives in Nigeria develop their skills, and we have
been expanding our services list. For me, the math is easy. The more creatives
we take on, the more skilled Nigerians there are, and consequently, the more Words
on Us can do, and the more we can earn and pay.
Words on Us can now provide nearly all the content
development services any business needs for visibility and brand awareness,
from social media to website. This growth happened between February 2020 and
August 2020; before the end of the year, we hope to be able to create ALL kinds
of content so our clients never have to go looking for anything.
The principle that guides the growth of Words on Us is the
same one that I live by and encourage staff and interns at Words on Us to keep
close. This principle is to constantly strive to do more, and be more.
When your goal is to create more and more value
continuously, you’re bound to succeed. Value attracts success; it’s the
simplest math there is.
