Do it worried
Do it frightened
Do it uncertain, but do it.
Here’s the thing about growth; you have to move, forward or sideways, you just have to move. If you don’t make the wrong move, you’ll never make the right one.
I have never taken a step where I was certain that
everything was going to be great. There are no such steps. They simply do not
exist. 9 times out of 10, I have taken uncertain steps, and they have turned
out to be the right steps. The other 10% were the times when I took a step and
nearly fell in a ditch.
Now, here is the good thing about taking these steps. If it’s
the wrong one, you get to trace your steps back and try another path.
There are a million reasons why one thing will not work out,
but for every million reasons, there are 9 million more reasons why it can turn
out great.
Take the class. Apply for the job. Ask for the promotion. Bid
for the contract. Start something new; a blog, a different career path, a
business, a cooking show, a podcast. Not to sound like Nike, but whatever it
is, just do it.
You could fail, it’s a possibility. Nevertheless, there are
two possibilities, and why should you consider just one possibility when there
are two?
You could become a world star!
Take it from me, you can win at this new thing.
I’m here right now, typing this mail at 1:41 am, doing a job
I love, and feeling fulfilled enough to attempt to inspire people. All of this
came from one step.
I got admission into the university to study Religion. It saddened me, I had applied
to study Law. In the department of religious studies there were dozens of
others who hated the course, knew they were wasting their time, yet refused to
move. After the first semester in the department, I knew I could not even
pretend to tolerate the courses. By the second semester, I applied to transfer
to the department of English and Literary Studies. There was a chance that the
transfer would fall through, and I would lose my place in the university. I did
it anyway; frightened, terrified, very very afraid.
It worked out great. A lot of other people graduated from
the department of religious studies very confused because they had no idea what
they were going to do with the degree. I got an education that was worth the
tuition fees, and this set me up for a great career in creative writing.
Are you afraid?
That’s fine, totally normal.
Do you think that Achebe, the legendary writer, was not afraid? He sent out those manuscripts anyway.
Was Teni certain that her brand of music would be accepted by Nigerians? I think not. She did it anyway.
Take it from me, you’d feel much better knowing you tried. Do
it. Give it everything. Do it.
You’ll be just fine.
Cheers! To doing stuff.
Thank you!!!
