Kainene

It happened last night, my first sexual intercourse as a married woman. There’s no surprise there. Then again, this sexual intercourse of which I speak was not with my husband. SURPRISE!

My name is Kainene. You see, I am a girl from a family of many girls. Father feels the only way he can improve our drab life, is to give away all of his daughters to rich men, he calls it marriage. I was the kind of girl that spent recess in school bent over the desk, reading a paperback. I was also the kind of girl who said “recess” instead of “breaktime” in the village school. I had really big dreams; I was going to study law at the university, become a big lawyer, have a lot of money, marry the perfect man and live happily ever after in a mansion with four lovely kids; simply put.

Days after leaving school, my mother called me out of the room I shared with 3 siblings. I came out to meet her with my index finger in-between the pages of a John Grisham novel. “Nene! You and books! You have finished school o!” mother had exclaimed.
“No o! I’ve not finished, I will still go to the university to become a lawyer”
“Your mother and I are old and tired.” Father said from his seat, “You have 3 younger ones. Who will train them? You will marry soon. You need to help out”That was the end of the matter. I worked at my Uncle’s Laundromat, until the day Father told me not to go anymore because “they” had begun discussions with the family of the man that would marry me. It was the quiet customer who came to the village every weekend to see his old mother and always brought her clothes for washing.

Back to the present, The man I had sex with last night left very early this morning, my husband is back on his side of the bed. He calls the man his assistant. The man’s job appears to be, I quote my husband, to “make love to you and give us babies”. My husband pays him well. I should be happy, I have everything I need. Mother will go to church with a fat hen on Sunday, wearing the ridiculously expensive clothes my husband bought her. I can’t tell them my husband prefers men.
