The girl who became Fearless - Seiyefa Faith

"I promise not to waste anytime" I told my mum as I hurried quickly to Tombia market to get fresh vegetables and prawns. I walked down with a visible frown on my face as my mum had scolded me to trek down to the market as it was not far from where I lived. I had only walked for five minutes when I distractedly tripped over a stone and sent my naira notes flying across the street. As I bent down to pick my askew cash, I saw Mr Tamumo walking towards me "This man has become the bane of my existence" I muttered to myself. "Good afternoon sir" I said out loud
"Fine girl" he replied as he reached out to touch my arm "don't you want my package?" pulling back,I retorted "I don't know what you mean sir, but whatever it is I am not interested".
"Don't pretend Tari, you think you're a small girl, you're almost 15. See, I will take care of you, don't be afraid, you no go get belle."
I understood quite clearly what he wanted but I was appalled and thrown off by his persistence. "I will report to my mother if you don't stop disturbing me" I spat at him. "see this small brat" he fired back "you think say you fine, you no happy say man like me dey find you, you think say you go amount to anything? Na man house you go still end. You don see man wey wan dash you money, you no happy." My eyes shone with tears as I was deeply hurt by his words. I am sick of men belittling me just to coax me into getting into bed with them. I am sick of running past Mr Tamumo's house in the fear that he might grab me and drag me into his one bedroom apartment as he had tried to do on two occasions.
"Mr Tamuno" I called out as he turned to walk away "I'm not going to be the girl whose life you'll ruin, I'm not going to be your temporary fix, I'm not going to be compulsively dependent on you. Contrary to your thoughts and opinion Mr Tamuno, I'm going to create the type of life I want and don't you dare tell me where I'll end up. If you think that because you see young girls walking up and down the street, you can make your silly advances towards them and try to coax them into believing that they will amount to nothing and are only good for your carnal desires, I'll have you know that I'm a girl who's not afraid to dream and say I CAN! I don't need your handouts that you'll exchange for my body" All this I said from a reasonable distance.
Mr Tamuno clearly feeling insulted made a dash towards me, I made a run for Tombia market with the scorching sun burning my back and a grin on my face. I had suddenly become fearless.

  1. This is very beautiful, Faith. Tari is indeed very brave. Not many girls her age would know to reply in the manner she had. Well done Dosti.
